Welcome to the Speech Communication Center!
The Speech Communication Center is a unique experiment that merges academic study with the applied practice of communication as it occurs across the campus in teaching and learning, research, governance, administration, and leadership. The Speech Communication Center draws upon the communication expertise of its members to provide academic and professional support programs designed to meet the needs of students, faculty, and staff across the curriculum and across the campus.

Established in 1989, the Teaching Development Program at the Missouri University of Science and Technologyprovides a variety of activities to help ensure that students receive the most effective teaching possible. Learn more about these programs below:
The week prior to the start of classes each semester, all prospective Graduate Teaching Assistants at Missouri S&T attend workshops covering the major facets of instructional communication theory and practice. Following the workshops, persons wishing to hold GTA appointments must pass an extensive micro-teaching evaluation by program and departmental staff and students before being assigned teaching responsibilities.
The wide variety of accents with which English is spoken can be bewildering for college students. This program, offered each semester, provides non-native faculty and teaching assistants the opportunity to learn and practice standard Midwestern spoken English.
Micro-Teaching Review Program:
Teaching Faculty who wish to improve their methods may request confidential micro-teaching reviews with a member of the program staff. Reviews normally have four components--an initial session in which teaching objectives are identified, a videotaped classroom session, a review session in which the requesting teacher and program staff analyze the videotaped record to identify strengths and weaknesses and to set objectives for further development, and a follow-up stage where progress is periodically reviewed.
The Fund for Teaching Excellence:
Recognizing that a wealth of teaching expertise is available away from the Missouri S&T campus, this program provides funding for Missouri S&T teachers to attend seminars, workshops, and short courses to improve their teaching skills with special attention to the methods and techniques particular to their disciplines and professional interests.
Communication Skills Screening and Referral:
Effective lecturing and interpersonal communication skills are expected of everyone assigned teaching responsibilities at Missouri S&T. Students are asked to rate their teachers' communication abilities each semester. Teachers may be referred to this program if improvement is indicated. Additionally, this program provides screening of non-native speakers of English before hiring through the standardized Speaking Proficiency English Assessment Kit (SPEAK) and a program of individual evaluation. Remedial assistance is available through the American Pronunciation program as well as through referral to other programs on and off campus.
Special Activities and Events:
The Teaching Development Program sponsors a variety of speakers, teleconferences, and other presentations and services designed to ensure that teaching at Missouri S&T is the finest it can be.
